How to understand the double-dummy grid
The double-dummy grid shows the theoretical optimum number of tricks for each suit and declarer with best play and defence. The theoretical optimum number of tricks is based upon a theoretical knowledge of the exact location of every card
This means that for instance KJ combinations and Queens will always be known, etc.
The “Par” result (highlighted in green below) is the best result acquired with optimal play/defence. This may be a sacrifice by one side. If the same number of tricks can be taken by North/South – North will be listed as declarer. East will be declarer for East/West.
If there is a positional advantage by playing by a specific seat – then this seat will be declarer.
You can see the double dummy both on our result pages on our web sites and in our apps
The optimum result is North-South making 4 spades.
This requires some good guessing, but double-dummy optimum is based upon you can see all 4 hands.
Note that North-South also makes 3NT.
With South as declarer and a diamond lead through the Ace, this is no problem if you have seen all the cards.
Spade to 10 in trick 2, 6 spade tricks and you finish with a heart finesse.
